EVENT HIRE: EXTREME TEA CHALLENGE

Our Extreme Tea Challenge is a fun but active competition where participants cycle to heat the temperature of a kettle to the highest level possible within a set time. In teams of two, the competitors speed as fast as they can together on the stationary bikes to generate electricity to heat the water in the kettle.

This competition which is similar to our Power Challenge is an engaging & intense activity demonstrating the energy required to power the most basic of human comforts: hot water. Anything that needs heating up requires more energy than you can imagine! This workshop is educational & fun, once you’ve tried it you'll think twice about flicking on the kettle, especially when you realise that your effort has only powered a fraction of what a kettle actually needs to boil water.

How it works
Two Bicycle Hub Generators are connected to our Watt Meter, our Temperature Tower and the Low Voltage Kettle that will reflect as much energy as you can generate on the bicycles.

There are two elements of learning to this energy competition. As the participants pedal, our analogue Watt Meter takes real-time readings of how much power the cyclist is generating which is displayed in Watts. At the same time our Temperature Tower begins to light up displaying the rising temperature of the water in the kettle measured by a thermocouple. In teams of two, the competitors have to cycle together for two minutes in an attempt to heat the water to the highest temperature possible whilst also being able to see how many watts they are generating!

We put the name of the persons next to the appliance they’ve ‘powered’ on our popup Energy Banner along with the temperature of the water they've heated in the kettle. Participants will soon see that the 20 degrees they heat the water to, would make a very cold cup of tea and they will want to try and beat their score again and again!

We supply:

  • 2x Bicycles to suit most people
  • 2x Bicycle Hub Motors and training stands
  • 1x Low Voltage Kettle / Thermocouple
  • 1x Temperature Tower / speaker stand
  • 1x Analogue watt meter / speaker stand

Overview Want to start your own bicycle powered initiative? Then look no further....

The Mini Power Station Legacy workshop consists of a number of highly practical sessions where we work closely with a group of up to 20 individuals to build their own bicycle powered cinema or stage. We will guide participants through every step of the build, whilst explaining the function and physics behind each of the components. Upon completion, participants will have the confidence to operate and maintain their own equipment as well as how to run an event safely and successfully, thus continuing the legacy of using bicycle power to educate people about energy.

Main objectives:

  • To build a cycle power cinema or stage
  • To build confidence within a group so they can independently run their own events.
  • To hand over technical knowledge so a group can maintain and enhance their own equipment
  • To produce a manual for future individuals involved with the equipment

We for each session we supply:

  • 2x Technical Staff
  • All bicycle powered equipment
  • Energy efficient peripheral equipment i.e. PA, projectors, DVD player, record player etc.
  • Materials and tools
  • (Bicycles can be provided on request)

"The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine.” Olympiad John Howard

Electric Pedals design and build pedal powered equipment for all sorts of applications. We also are available to hire for a range of events from bicycle powered cinema, music stages, energy engagements and workshops.

Welcome to Electric Pedals, maker and provider of pedal powered installations. We like to think that if you can dream it, we can create it and you can pedal it. From our workshop in Peckham we offer a full production service for all your creative ideas. We also are an event hire company for bicycle powered cinemas, music stages, energy awareness events, workshops and other activities.

We use the energy from people cycling to generate electricity for events & permanent installations ranging from outdoor cinemas, educational workshops, music stages, outdoor classrooms in schools, phone-charging at festivals and many more. We can power almost anything! All of this without using a single battery. Pedal power is not only a clean & fun method of generating electricity, it's also an amazing way to promote sustainability, exercise and energy appreciation.

It all started at the Big Chill Festival in 2007. David Butcher who had been innovating pedal power for a long time before us, came over from the United States to build a bicycle-powered lantern tree. Bicycles were set facing out in a circle around the base of an enormous oak tree. Each bicycle was connected to lanterns of varying colour and as people got on and off the bikes, the lanterns flickered on and off; their brightness reflecting the energy of the cyclist. Electric Pedals was born out of this simple yet beautiful idea, and it continues to influence us today in our celebration of the power of the pedal.

We design and build everything at our workshop in the Bussey Building in Peckham, London. You can hire us for an event or buy our equipment to keep for your own bike-powered activities. We've worked with companies from Uruguay to more locally in SE London teaching people about the benefits of pedal power. We're always looking to develop our educational workshops so if you want to learn more about how our kit works, get in touch through our Contact page. Please also check out our Portfolio to see the variety of bike-powered fun we've been having since Electric Pedals began.

Thinking of powering your own events BUT don't know where to start?

As well as running pedal-powered events all over the world, we build and sell our products so you can too!

If you are interested in purchasing some of our products, do not hesitate to get in touch.

Please read the following short guide to get an idea of what is required if you are looking to power something using human energy.

An introduction to Pedal-powering your own events:

To begin converting human energy to power, there are three basic steps;

  • Power generation
  • Power distribution
  • Power management

The whole process is fairly straight forward, but a basic understanding of these three steps will give you a clear idea of exactly what you need to get started.

First of all, we must create the electricity! At Electric Pedals our goal is to convert human energy into electricity, and our preferred choice of power generation is (you guessed it!) the BICYCLE. All our gear is built with pedal-power in mind.

Our bicycle hub generators, friction generators and motors produce electicity by converting the kinetic energy from pedalling or hand-cranking and are the starting point for pedal-powering your own events.

If you require equipment to generate electricity or would like information on any of our power generation products, then click HERE.

So what happens to the electricity you have generated?

POWER DISTRIBUTION: LINKING TWO OR MORE BIKES TOGETHER

For information on linking 2 or more bikes together, click on the image

For information on linking 2 or more bikes together, click on the image

Maybe the power of a single bike or hand crank isnt going to be enough for what you had in mind. If you are looking to power something bigger, like a cinema with music, projector, lights etc, you are going to need more bikes. And you are going to need to link them all together and distribute the electricity. We have come up with a easy and robust solution and have built our own bus-boards capable of linking 2 or more bikes together. Each bus board takes a pair of bicycles and creates a stable base for mounting the bikes ready to be linked to more bus-boards or to your power station.

Power station? Why do I need a power station?

POWER MANAGEMENT: MANAGING THE ELECTRICITY YOU HAVE GENERATED

If you need to manage your electricity or would like any more information on what size of power station you would require, click on the power station above.

If you need to manage your electricity or would like any more information on what size of power station you would require, click on the power station above.

Once you have generated electricity using our hand-cranks or bicycles, and have linked them all together, you are going to need to manage it and converted into a form we can use and manage safely. So we build our own POWER STATIONS to do this for you. Without the use of batteries, we have designed and built these stations to handle the electricity produced by our power generation equipment. They will cleanly, safely and efficiently convert your pedal-power into a power source similar to that used at home.

These stations are the heart of your system and play a necessary role in the running of human-powered events.

Event Hire: Medium Bicycle Cinema

Bring people together to share a unique experience and develop a stronger sense of community with pedal power.

Our Medium Bicycle Cinema uses the energy from 6-8 adults and children cycling to provide a cinematic performance for an audience of up to 300 people. This system is half the size of the Big Bicycle Cinema and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

The Medium Bicycle Cinema is another great way to bring a community or group together to share an alternative experience of cinema. As the audience cycle to generate all the necessary power for the performance, we hope that this will spark discussions about energy consumption between parents and their children, and between friends and couples. Pedal power can bring extraordinary entertainment to events helping to raise awareness about energy sustainability and the environment.
