PROJECTS > ENERGY SPACE
Electric Pedals collaborated with Binom Architects on an innovative workplace installation for the new 2,000 sqm London office of green energy supplier Green Network. The project explored how physical engagement with space could be used to generate electrical energy and create a more conscious relationship between movement, effort and environment within a working office.
Installation
Modified vintage bikes generators were integrated into the workspace, allowing occupants to generate electrical power.
The energy produced was used to control a series of suspended LED cloud sculptures positioned throughout the space. As users engaged with the system, their effort generated electrical power that triggered changing light sequences within the clouds, animating them in response to movement and output.
The installation created a direct connection between physical engagement and visual transformation, allowing occupants to see the immediate effect of their effort on the surrounding environment.
Impact
People immediately understood the effort required to create electricity
Friendly competition and collaboration emerged naturally around the bikes
Energy stopped being abstract and became physical and collective
Outcome
Increased dwell time and repeat participation in communal areas
Demonstrated how human-powered systems can anchor an engagement space
Created a conversation piece that attracts visitors and clients
Demonstrated that sustainable systems can be visually compelling
