Emergency Bike Generator for Power Cuts
The UK government now advises every household to be ready for power cuts and emergencies, and wind-up torches and radios are selling out. The Emergency Bike Generator is a pedal-powered generator for the home: pedal to charge phones, power banks, LED lights and radios, with no fuel, no fumes and no grid.
Built in our London workshop using the same hub motor and friction generators as our festival phone-charging bikes and bicycle cinemas. It puts out 50 to 80 W continuous through an IP-rated box with a voltage regulator, voltage display, USB-C and XT60 outputs. Your legs are far stronger than your arms, so a few minutes of pedalling does what an hour of winding never could. Price on request.

Common Questions
What can a bike generator power in a power cut?
Phones, tablets, power banks, radios and LED lights. It is designed to keep people in touch and able to see, not to run a fridge or a heater.
How long do I need to pedal to charge a phone?
At 50 to 80 W you produce several times what a phone needs, so it charges about as fast as from a wall socket. The limit is how fast the phone accepts charge, not you.
Is it safe to use indoors?
Yes. Unlike a petrol generator there is no fuel, no exhaust and no carbon monoxide, and it is almost silent.
Does it have a battery?
Not as standard. It runs live from your pedalling, with a capacitor buffer to smooth the power. An optional battery lets you store energy for lights and phones overnight, or pedal a power bank during the day.
How is it better than a wind-up torch or radio?
A wind-up gadget powers one small device. Pedalling produces many times more power, so one bike can keep the whole household’s phones, lights and radio going.
Do I need my own bike?
Yes. We supply the hub motor or friction generator and the output box, and it works with an ordinary bike.
