PROJECTS > BACKPACK CINEMA - MALAWI
We developed a pedal-powered cinema backpack kit in collaboration with UK charity Purple Field Productions (PFP) and their partner Temwa, to show educational films in remote areas of Malawi. PFP produces educational and humanitarian films for communities worldwide, in their local languages. However, screening these films can be challenging in areas with no electricity or fuel to power a generator. Electric Pedals pioneered an innovative, human-powered solution.
Backpack Cinema generates the electricity needed to project a film entirely through human energy. The kit, including the projector, fits into a rucksack and can be carried across rivers and dense undergrowth, ready to set up on site in minutes. With sustained but relaxed pedalling, a full-length film can be screened for the entire community.
PFP showcased the film ULIMI MCHUMA CHATHU (Farming Our Wealth), an agricultural film made with and for Malawian farmers. It demonstrated new techniques to combat increasing droughts caused by climate change and featured local farmers sharing practical methods to improve productivity and sustainability, enhancing the quality of life in some of the poorest rural communities.
Electric Pedals operates 16 Backpack Cinemas worldwide, expanding access to education and engagement through human-powered cinema.
