PROJECTS > CYCLERATE – DETROIT, USA
CycleRATE was developed for the Detroit City of Design Competition as part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The project explored how human-powered energy systems could support safer, more engaging neighbourhood environments through light, sound and participation. Electric Pedals provided the generator systems and technical framework for a prototype installation combining pedal and hand-powered energy generation with interactive lighting and charging.
The Installation
CycleRATE used hand-powered cranks and stationary pedal generators to convert human mechanical input into usable electrical output.
This electrical output powered low-voltage LED lighting, Bluetooth speakers and USB charging points integrated into the installation.
As participants generated energy, lighting built incrementally across the structure, visually representing the rise in electrical output.
The installation demonstrated how human-generated electrical output can activate public space through visibility and collective interaction.
Design and Deployment
The installation was developed through collaboration between architectural, urban and lighting design teams within the Detroit City of Design programme.
All generator and control systems were designed and fabricated in London and shipped for local assembly and installation in Detroit.
The project was delivered without Electric Pedals travelling to the USA, reducing the carbon impact associated with international deployment while enabling local installation.
The control system was designed to allow future refinement and programming by local students and community groups.
