The Installation

• The installation was built around three human-powered energy stations representing wind, water and sun.

• A hand crank turned a wind turbine, demonstrating how rotational movement drives wind energy systems. A blue pedal-powered bike pumped water to represent hydro power, while a red bike powered a bright light symbolising energy captured from the sun by solar panels.

• As visitors pedalled or cranked, physical effort was converted into usable electrical power in real time. Motion, light and water responded immediately to the amount of energy generated, translating large-scale renewable infrastructure into something tangible and easy to understand.

• Positioned within busy retail environments, the installation created a highly visible and participatory demonstration of renewable energy in action.

The Activation

• Visitors of all ages stepped in throughout the day, often working together to activate all three renewable elements at once.

• Families returned repeatedly to generate enough power to run each system simultaneously, turning the installation into a shared moment of collaboration within the shopping environment.

• The simple physical interaction encouraged conversation about how energy is generated and used in everyday spaces.

The Outcome

• The installation formed part of the wider Westfield Good Festival programme designed to inspire visitors to adopt more sustainable behaviours and highlight positive environmental initiatives across retail and community partners.

• By linking physical effort directly to motion, light and water, the project made renewable energy immediate, visible and memorable for thousands of visitors across both locations.
